Empower Your Students: Book Alyssa Huynh for Heartfelt Anti-Racism and Diversity Talks

In every school, students are not just learning academic subjects — they are discovering who they are, who they want to be, and how they relate to the world around them. These formative years are critical, and the conversations that take place in the classroom and beyond have the power to shape their understanding of themselves and others. Now more than ever, it’s vital that we create safe, inclusive environments where all students feel seen, heard, and valued.

I’m Alyssa Huynh, a Vietnamese-Australian writer, author, and anti-racism educator. Through my journey, I’ve learned the importance of connection, of being seen in our full humanity, and of the deep impact that compassion and understanding can have on our lives. It’s this belief in the power of human connection that drives my work today — particularly the work I do in schools.

Creating Safe Spaces Through Honest Conversations

I’ve had the honour of speaking at schools, sharing my personal experiences and the lessons I’ve learned in my life’s journey. My goal is not just to impart information — it’s to create an open, compassionate space where students can explore their own identities, share their stories, and begin to understand the world through a more empathetic lens. I talk about racism, identity, and belonging because these are the issues that so many of us face in silence, feeling isolated and unsure where to turn.

By sharing my own experiences growing up as an Asian-Australian woman, I aim to open hearts and minds. My story is just one of many, but if it can help others feel less alone, if it can spark the courage in even one student to speak up, to advocate for themselves, or to be a better ally, then it is worth it.

What I Offer: Anti-Racism and Diversity Talks for Schools

In my workshops and speaking engagements, I offer more than just a discussion. I offer an invitation to look inward, to reflect on our actions, and to envision a future where inclusivity, respect, and understanding guide the way we interact with others.

The talks I lead touch on:

  • Understanding the impact of racism: From overt acts of hate to the subtle, everyday microaggressions, I help students understand how racism manifests and why it’s so important to speak out against it.

  • Supporting students of colour: I provide guidance on how students of colour can cope with and respond to racism, offering strategies for self-care, emotional resilience, and how to protect their mental wellbeing while navigating these challenges.

  • Cultural empathy and connection: By reflecting on our shared humanity, we foster a deeper appreciation for each other’s unique backgrounds, stories, and perspectives.

  • The importance of allyship: It’s not enough to stand by and remain silent. I guide students through how to speak out, how to support others, and how to take action in their own lives.

  • Building a sense of belonging: I help students feel empowered to embrace their cultural identity, find strength in their differences, and create communities where everyone can thrive.

Why These Conversations Matter

The world is constantly changing, and with it, the experiences of young people are shifting in profound ways. It’s essential that we equip them with the tools to understand and address racism early on, before biases are further entrenched and hurtful stereotypes take root. These conversations are not easy, but they are necessary. Schools are the heart of young people’s lives — where they form friendships, explore ideas, and begin to define themselves. It’s the perfect place to start these important dialogues.

By inviting me to speak at your school, you are providing your students with an opportunity to grow, to learn, and to be part of something bigger than themselves. Together, we can cultivate an environment of empathy, respect, and action.

How My Talks Benefit Your Students

When your students leave one of my talks or workshops, they will walk away with:

  1. A deeper understanding of racism and prejudice – By exploring the many ways racism impacts individuals and communities, students will be better equipped to recognise it and take a stand.

  2. Tools for empathy and cultural awareness – With a greater understanding of diverse cultures and experiences, students will feel more connected to each other, regardless of background.

  3. Confidence in their identity – By exploring and embracing their own unique backgrounds, students will develop a stronger sense of self and pride in who they are.

  4. Practical steps for positive change – They will gain practical strategies for being allies, for standing up against injustice, and for creating safe, inclusive spaces in their schools and communities. Many students are aware of racism and its prominence in schools, but they often don’t feel comfortable speaking up or aren’t sure how to make a difference. My talks will share lived experience and thoughtful advice, empowering them to recognise the power of their voices and take action in creating positive change.
